Sheriffs Evacuate Seven Families and Landlord in Kauma

At least seven tenant families and their landlord have been left stranded in Kauma, Area 12 in Lilongwe, after Sheriffs allegedly evicted them from their homes over a land dispute involving the landlord and his ex-wife.

One of the tenants, Martin Chinyama, told us that the Sheriffs allegedly arrived at the compound around midnight, forcing all occupants out, including the landlord himself.

“They came without warning and ordered everyone out. We had to remove our property in the dark, and now we have nowhere to keep it,” said Chinyama.

Chinyama has expressed concern for the safety of their families, especially children.

The landlord of the compound, Saidi Chindamba Wailesi, has confirmed the incident, alleging that the matter stems from a divorce case in which his ex-wife moved the courts seeking ownership of part of the houses.

Wailesi, stresses that he is currently seeking temporary shelter at a certain private school within the area.

"I bought that land in 2005," said Wailesi.

Meanwhile, Judiciary spokesperson, Ruth Mputeni, has indicated that the eviction was carried out following a valid court order, which had expired.

"The procedure of such an order has to be served to the defendants 30 day prior to the execution, giving them time evacuate the place. This process was done. After the expirly of the 30-day amnesty, the people didn't vacate, hence the action," said Mputeni.

"The reason why the officers went at night was because during the time they were being served the warrant, the occupants were violent hence the decision to go at night," she added.
