Fuel Tankers Start Arriving in Malawi

A fleet of fuel tankers has started arriving in Malawi through the Songwe Border Post in Karonga, following days of political unrest in Tanzania after a disputed election.

One of the truck drivers, Paul Nnesa, told Zodiak Online that only fuel tankers are currently being allowed to cross through the Kasumulu Border on the Tanzanian side.

“Yes, I can confirm that only fuel tankers are being allowed to pass through Kasumulu Border, while some are still stuck at the Port of Dar es Salaam awaiting documentation,” said Nnesa.

Meanwhile, Karonga District Commissioner (DC) Thomas Chigwenembe says his office is closely monitoring the situation amid reports that some Tanzanians had crossed into Karonga to seek refuge from the political violence.

“I will be visiting the border today to assess the situation, as reports indicate that some people are returning home while others remain reluctant,” said Chigwenembe.

The unrest in Tanzania follows a disputed presidential election, after which President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in at a ceremony held at a military facility in the capital, Dodoma, attended by several foreign heads of state and government.
