Water For People Constructs Improved Latrines at Nkwilira Primary School in Neno

Magombo- Cutting a ribbon for the modern toilets

Water for People organisation has handled over two sets of Inclusive Ventilated Improved Latrines at Nkwilira Primary School in Neno District after noting that sanitation was being compromise.

District education authorities sounded an alarm at the shortage of toilets in many schools, describing the situation as counter productive to the education of the physically challenged leaners and girls during their menstrual cycle.

Neno District Council Director of Education and Sports Foster Magombo said investment in school infrastructure is key to increasing learner enrollment and achieve inclusive education.

"We need more of these structures that are disability friendly and have girls change rooms, they enhance sanitation," said Magombo.

Water For People WASH program manager, Engineer Patrick Ngwira said they have responded to the call by the constructing the facilities to ensure that no school age going child is left behind in accessing quality education and sanitation.

He said that their aim is to see girls attending to lessons uninterrupted and that they have private rooms for changing their sanitary pads.

"these environments are good for girls to excel in their studies and we want to see leaners accessing washrooms inclusively,".

Ngwira further said many schools in the district have no facilities for the physically challenged learners and change rooms for girls during their menstrual cycle, a development that force them to either abscond or drop out of school.

A standard eight leaner at the school, Leticia Charles said the facilities are timely as they were facing challenges during their menstrual cycle, adding they have been exchanging toilets with boys.

Water For People has also repaired a broken borehole at the school to compliment their WASH efforts.
