VELOM Appeals for Support to Surviving War Veterans

General Henry Odilo (Retired): many surviving veterans and families of fallen soldiers continue to face hardship

The Veterans and Ex-Service League of Malawi (VELOM) has appealed to Malawians to honour the country’s fallen heroes by supporting surviving war veterans and the families of those who died in service.

VELOM Chairperson, General Henry Odilo (Retired), said the best way to honour soldiers who sacrificed their lives in battle is to ensure that surviving war heroes, as well as the widows and children of fallen soldiers, are well cared for.

Speaking to Zodiak at the end of Remembrance Sunday commemorations held at the Lilongwe War Memorial Tower, General Odilo observed that many surviving veterans and families of fallen soldiers continue to face hardship — a situation he described as unfortunate given their immense sacrifices.

“When we help surviving veterans and support the widows and children of fallen soldiers, we are truly remembering and honouring our fallen heroes,” said General Odilo.

Malawi joined other nations across the world in remembering those who lost their lives in the World Wars and subsequent conflicts — an event commemorated every second Sunday of November.

Globally, the combined toll of World War I and World War II is estimated at 85 to 105 million deaths, with World War II accounting for the majority. World War I caused approximately 15 to 20 million deaths, while World War II claimed an estimated 50 to 85 million lives.

The Lilongwe commemoration was presided over by Vice President Jane Ansah, who represented President Peter Mutharika. Similar events were held in Mzuzu, led by Second Vice President Enoch Chihana, and in Zomba, where Minister of Gender, Community and Social Welfare Mary Navicha officiated.

The ceremonies featured gun salutes, moments of silence, and wreath-laying in honour of soldiers who lost their lives in service to the nation.
