Neno District Council Monitoring and Evaluation Officer David Namanjasi has emphasized on the need to train area disaster risk management committees on the stages of managing disasters.

He spoke this today during a District Disaster Risk Management Committee meeting, a Committee which has been tasked to train 30 Disaster Risk Management Committees in the four Traditional Authorities of the district.

The Committees include those from  Area, Village, and T/A level.

Namanjasi said that communities must be equipped with knowledge of managing and responding to disasters that have been forecast in their areas in a bid to minimize damages.

"We expect to commence the trainings by Wednesday this week because we do not have time to waste as we are already in the rainy season where disasters are eminent," said Namanjasi.

Disaster Risk Management officer Brighton Mphinga has called on the committees to be trained, to also write detailed reports so that responders are able to respond accordingly.

He said that "if these Committees furnish us with right information, we will be able to redouble our efforts in assisting them and the people will be easily given their right immediate needs".

Neno District Council received funds from Save the Children under the Localisation Drive, to boost its capacity in managing disasters.

One of the implementing partner of the Localisation Drive, Beyond Our Hearts Foundation project officer Pemphero Nkhata said that disaster survivors must be treated with dignity to avoid further traumatizing them.

" We need to approach the survivors with total respect so that we slowly bring them back to their normal lives," she said.

Neno District Council Director of Planning and Development Charles Lomoni promises to assist all survivors of any type of disaster that might befall the district.
