Lilongwe, Malawi
The Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) has quashed calls made by some quarters that are calling for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Anabel Mtalimanja describing it as factually misguided and detrimental to the integrity of the electoral process.
The organisation's chairperson Benedicto Kondowe says decisions on Electoral Management Devices (EMDs) are made collectively by the Commission in accordance with Section 11 (3) and (5) of the Electoral Commission Act not solely by the MEC Chairperson.
"Specifically, subsection (5) states that decisions are made by majority vote of the Commissioners present, with the Chairperson only casting an additional vote in the event of a tie." Kondowe added.
Kondowe believes contact and dialogue is the solution to the standoff between opposition Political parties and MEC on the usage of the electoral management devices.
One of the group leaders calling for MEC chair to step down Sylvester Namiwa says they are not happy with MEC decision to reject an independent audit of the Election Management System.
"We want make to be prudent enough on how the EMDs will be used in this year's general election".Namiwa said.
A grouping called Citizens for Credible Elections, has announced that it will hold protests in Lilongwe this Thursday to force Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, and Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi to resign.
