Chawinga Honored in Lilongwe for Regional Sports Achievement

Malawi women’s national football team captain Tabitha Chawinga has finally received her award for being named the Best Athlete in the Southern Africa Region (Region 5), a title she earned during the Regional Annual Sports Awards (RASA) held in April this year in Zimbabwe.

Due to her absence at the original award ceremony, a special presentation was organized on Tuesday by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Malawi National Council of Sports at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Speaking after receiving the accolade, Chawinga expressed her gratitude and called the recognition a powerful source of motivation.

“This award is not just for me; it represents the dreams of every young girl who looks up to people like me, it gives me more strength to keep pushing and to continue inspiring others to aim high,” said Chawinga.

Chawinga, who now plays for Lyon Féminines in France was recognized for her outstanding contribution to football both locally and internationally.

Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire, who presided over the ceremony, said the government found it important to formally honor Chawinga for her historic win.

“This is a significant achievement not just for Tabitha, but for Malawi as a whole. Her success on the international stage puts our country on the map,” Mkandawire said.

He further emphasized the government’s commitment to uplifting sports in the country:

“As a ministry, we are steadfast in our efforts to support athletes and sports development. We also continue to call on the corporate sector to partner with us by investing more resources into sports,” Mkandawire added.
