MRA Urges Youth to Champion Environmental Conservation

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has urged young people to take a leading role in conserving the environment, warning that failure to do so could expose the country to adverse weather conditions in the future.

The call was made after MRA staff planted more than 400 trees around Kasungu Stadium.

Speaking after the exercise, MRA Station Manager for the Flexible Anti-Smuggling Team West (FASTWEST), Daniel James Chitika, said planting and caring for trees should be everyone’s responsibility, emphasizing the need for active youth participation in environmental conservation.

“These tree seedlings we have planted will begin to benefit the country in the years to come. That is why we are encouraging the youth to take a leading role in protecting the environment,” he said.

Chitika added that the MRA has put in place monitoring mechanisms to ensure the survival of the trees planted during this season.

Meanwhile, Kasungu Municipal Council Mayor Hastings Nyirongo said planting trees around the stadium should serve as a reminder to young people about the importance of protecting the environment for their future.

“We have several interventions in place to ensure that the trees planted this season survive and serve their intended purpose,” he said.

Nyirongo also urged parents to instill the culture of caring for trees in children from an early age.

The tree planting exercise was carried out by MRA staff together with officials from Kasungu Municipal Council and members of the surrounding community.

During the 2025–2026 tree planting season, Malawi aims to plant more than 40 million trees across the country.
