The chessboard is being set for a major showdown in the capital. The CRCL, in conjunction with Cubana Lounge, is gearing up to host the Cubana Lounge Team tournament on March 3rd, and if the early registrations are anything to go by, this year's edition is set to be a massive upgrade from the 2025 event.
Scheduled to kick off at 8:00 AM at the club's premises in Area 49, New Shire—just off the BP Filling station, Mnthunza street—the one-day rapid tournament will see teams of four battle it out over seven rounds, with each player getting 30 minutes on the clock. The format promises a fast-paced, intense day of cerebral sport.
And the stakes are higher than ever. Thanks to a significant boost from the venue sponsors, the prize pool has jumped to K1,000,000 in cash alone.
"This is a step up from last year," said Joseph Mwale the Central Region Chess GS, reflecting on the 2025 edition which had a total sponsorship of over K600,000. "Last year was a success, but this time Cubana Lounge has really stepped forward. They've put up K1,000,000 just for the prizes, on top of handling medals and other tournament logistics."
The support from Cubana goes beyond just writing a cheque. It's about the atmosphere the game creates. Speaking about his decision to back the event, the Cubana Lounge Director shared his appreciation for what chess brings to the table.
"It's all about bringing people together," he said. "Chess creates a unique kind of friendship and camaraderie, and that's exactly what Cubana stands for—socialising in a vibrant, sports-focused environment. Seeing these players locked in battle, then sharing a laugh after the game, that's the spirit we want to be a part of."
That spirit of unity is already on display in the registration list. The tournament has attracted attention from far and wide. A contingent is making the long journey from the north, with Kasungu Gambit sending two teams to test their mettle against the Lilongwe competition. They won't be the only travellers, as Salima Chess Club is also preparing for the trip.
The current lineup of registered clubs has powerhouses like Mwale Chess Academy (with both an A team and a Michigan-based B team) are set to compete, alongside the various King Hunters factions—A, Legends, and Mambulu. Other contenders include Dadaz Chess Club, Pacific Bar Chess Club (fielding two teams), Nkhotakota Chess Club, and the newly formed 2026 National Ladies Team.
However, organisers are keen to stress that the door is still wide open. With the registration deadline set for March 1st, more teams are encouraged to sign up and test their strategies. The entry fee is K80,000 per team, though in a move to encourage national participation, clubs based outside Lilongwe can enter for free.
