Lack of Funds Cripples Neno Feeder Roads Maintainance

People of Neno will still have to wait a little longer and continue using bump roads before they start enjoying council graded feeder roads due to financial challenges that has locked the works department.

Neno District director of public works, Pemphero Chikuse has told a Neno Civil Society Organizations Network meeting today, that at the moment the council is unable to do anything on roads as they have exhausted all funds.

"We have different baskets were we tap resources to grade our local roads, but now we are having none, and we approached CR-20 for help," said Chikuse.

But Neno CSOs chairperson Russel Msiska has asked the council to find alternatives funding.

He said as a council they should be active in sourcing funds to fund critical developments such as roads, saying roads play a vital role in people's lives.

But Chikuse in response, said, CR-20, a company constructing the Neno tarmac road, was willing to help upgrade the roads as a corporate social responsibility but council was to foot grader fuel, pegged at 200 litres for day, which they cannot afford.

He also said despite the council having its own grader which is gathering dust at Ligowe primary school due to some mechanical faults, they will only use it come March when they will be able to maintain it using government council budget.

Road users have been complaining of the bad condition of feeder roads in the district, a development they say is leaving the district to look old and undeveloped.
