Phiri Challenges Engineers to Provide Pro Bono Services

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri has urged engineers in the country to provide pro bono services to government and the public, saying the profession must give back to the community.

Speaking at World Engineering Day celebrations in Lilongwe today, Phiri said engineers should follow the example of lawyers and auditors, who are required to offer voluntary services as part of their licensing obligations.

He stressed that with the Constituency Development Fund increased to K5 billion, engineers will be expected to assist local government councils with specialized support.

Phiri also warned against corruption and prioritizing profits over quality infrastructure, urging engineers to consider the citizens who depend on clinics, schools, and roads.

“Almost all of the United Nations’ 2030 goals hinge on engineering,” he said. “Therefore, the engineers sitting in this house today are responsible for the success, or failures, of this nation.”

Malawi Engineering Institution (MIE) President and Board Chair Ronald Gundamtengo confirmed that the organization has already incorporated pro bono service provision into its strategic plan as a requirement for license renewal.

Dr. Gundamtengo added that infrastructure failures in Malawi are often due to preventable structural defects, calling for innovation paired with integrity.

He told engineers that technology must strengthen standards, not bypass them, a reference to this year's theme: Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization.

The event also marked the launch of the MIE Member Management System, a digital platform to modernize and strengthen the profession.

This year’s theme, “SMART Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization,” underscores the profession’s commitment to advancing sustainable development.
