Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has called for increased support for local talent, saying the lack of opportunities is preventing many young Malawians from reaching their full potential.
Bushiri made the remarks in Rumphi on Friday during the K5 million Major 1 Football Bonanza, which he organised.
He said many young people in Malawi, including those in Rumphi, are gifted in areas such as music and football but often fail to progress because of limited support.
“As a country, we must start supporting our own talent instead of waiting for outsiders to do it,” Bushiri said. “I know Rumphi has talent. There are many people here who are very talented, but they lack support.”
Rumphi District Council Director of Administration Raymond Nkhonya commended Bushiri for the initiative, which attracted a large number of people in the district.
Nkhonya said the event has helped expose youth talent in the district and could also help protect young people from immoral behaviour.
A representative of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe, Traditional Authority Kawazamawe, described the bonanza as a positive step towards youth development.
The traditional leader said the activity would keep young people occupied and help steer them away from drug abuse.
Santos Academy won the tournament after beating Bumba FC 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a post-match draw.
Similar bonanzas were also held in Mzimba and Karonga as part of efforts to uncover hidden talent.
