The Malawi Coalition for Kabaza Stakeholders Association (MACOKASA) says only 23,000 out of 2 million members have acquired motorcycle licenses, with 25,000 motorcycles registered in the ongoing government's registration exercise.
MACOKASA National Chairperson Moses Mwalabu told Zodiak Online that a lack of coordination among key stakeholders has been a major drawback for the exercise.
However, Mwalabu hopes the MACOKASA membership will utilize the new six-months extension period beginning 1st April this year.
"Our efforts aim to improve road safety and compliance with traffic regulations as such enforcement on non-compliant to the same must continue.
"We commit ourselves to keep working hand in hand with key stakeholders like Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DTRSS) and Malawi Police Service among others," said Mwalabu.
Executive Director for the Road Safety Alert Foundation, Joel Jere , has urged stakeholders to collaborate to ensure the exercise is a success.
"The exercise is crucial, given the risks associated with unregistered and unlicensed motorcycles.
Kabaza operators must ensure that their motorcycles are dully registered besides acquiring the license" said Jere.
50 percent of the country's road accidents are caused by Kabaza operators, according to the DTRSS.
