The Lions Club of Mtunthama has noted a significant increase in enrollment at Malingunde School for the Blind, with the number of learners rising from about 41 last year to 84 this year.
The club has described the increase as a positive development, saying it reflects growing awareness among parents about the importance of education for children with visual impairments.
Mtunthama Lions Club President, Lion Steven Muyaya, said the rise in student numbers has also increased the school's needs, prompting the club to step up its support.
"That is why we decided to complement the government's efforts by donating learning materials, bags of maize and rice, cooking oil, soap, and many other items," said Muyaya.
The club has been implementing various projects at the school aimed at promoting education for visually impaired children, helping them become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to national development.
"We have been visiting Malingunde School for the Blind for quite some time. Each visit reveals the challenges the institution continues to face. While we do what we can, it is not enough. We urge more individuals and organisations to join us in supporting the school so that together we can improve the lives of these children," he added.
Commenting on the situation, one of the school's two special needs teachers, Chifuniro Banda, highlighted some of the challenges facing the institution. He said the school currently has an outstanding water bill of approximately K390,000.
"We are extremely grateful for the support from Mtunthama Lions Club. They even initiated the construction of a fence, which has helped reduce theft and prevent accidents caused by people passing through the hostel premises. However, our needs remain extensive, including electricity and water bills, learning materials, and food. With the number of learners having doubled, our needs have also doubled," said Banda.
In addition to donating essential supplies, the Mtunthama Lions Club is spearheading the renovation of hostels, toilets, and other facilities at the school.
Established in 1971, Malingunde School for the Blind has a proud history of educating many notable individuals who have gone on to contribute to the country's development.
