Ward councillors in the country have renewed calls for Parliament to consider introducing a provision that would allow councillors to acquire duty-free vehicles as part of their work benefits.
Speaking on behalf of the councillors, Zomba City Council Mayor, Christopher Jana, said the increasing loss of councillors while on duty highlights the urgent need for safer mobility for local leaders.
“Since 2014, at least 15 councillors have died in motorcycle-related accidents while executing their duties. This is a clear indication that we need safer means of transport,” said Jana.
Jana added, “We are calling on our legislators to act selflessly and introduce a law that will allow councillors to purchase duty-free vehicles".
He made the remarks today during the burial of Councillor Elisha Joel Milanzi of Muonekera Ward in Thyolo, who died on Tuesday in a motorcycle accident while travelling home after attending his first council meeting.
Thyolo District Commissioner, Hudson Kuphanga, described Milanzi’s death as a significant loss to the district.
“His passing is a huge blow to local leadership. Councillor Milanzi was dedicated to public service and community development,” Kuphanga lamented.
Thyolo Goliati Member of Parliament, Maureen Namwali, also paid tribute to Milanzi, praising his commitment to education and youth empowerment.
“He supported vulnerable learners by allowing needy students to attend his secondary school for free. He had a big heart for his community,” Namwali said.
Born on 29 October 1984, the late Milanzi was also a pastor of Good News Revival Church. He is survived by his wife and four children. He was sworn in as councillor on 12 November 2025.
