Govt Set to Launch National Multi-Sector Nutrition Policy

Government through the Department of Nutrition, HIV and AIDS (DNHA), is set to launch the National Multi-Sector Nutrition Policy on June 26, 2025.

In the lead-up to the launch, the department is calling for increased funding to improve the country’s nutritional outcomes, an essential driver of national development.

Speaking during a media orientation in Lilongwe, Deputy Director of Nutrition, Kondwani Mpeniuwawa, emphasized that the new policy aims to enhance the nutritional status of all Malawians, particularly vulnerable groups. He highlighted the crucial link between nutrition and socio-economic development.

“People must understand that nutrition is not just a health issue, it is foundational to Malawi’s social and economic progress,” Mpeniuwawa said.

On his part, Chief Nutritionist Sylvester Kathumba explained that the policy seeks to reduce malnutrition, morbidity, and mortality rates linked to poor nutrition.

“This policy will also strengthen the enabling environment for multisectoral nutrition programming. Nutrition is narrowly seen as a health concern but in reality, it cuts across several sectors,” he said.

However, Kathumba stressed that adequate funding would be essential for the successful implementation of the policy.

Meanwhile, World Vision’s Advocacy and Campaigns Manager, Lizzie Lombe, welcomed the policy, noting that it aligns well with the organization's "Enough" project, which aims to eliminate child hunger.

The National Multi-Sector Nutrition Policy is designed to bring together various sectors, such as health, agriculture, education, and social protection to address the complex and interconnected challenges of nutrition in Malawi.
