MUST Suspends Five Students Over Examination Cheating

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) has suspended five students after being found guilty of cheating during examinations.

According to a memo dated 5th November 2025, signed by University Registrar, Dr. Duncane Batizani, the disciplinary action follows hearings conducted by the institution’s Academic Disciplinary Committee which found the students guilty of academic misconduct.

The memo addressed to all staff and students indicates that the affected students were involved in various forms of cheating during university examinations.

One of the students has been suspended for two academic years, while four others have been suspended for one academic year each.

In one case, a student was also penalized for failing to attend a disciplinary hearing without valid reasons, leading to additional punishment — eviction from the halls of residence for one academic year upon return from suspension.

“The committee found the students guilty of the charge of cheating in examinations. Appropriate disciplinary measures have since been enforced in line with university regulations,” reads part of the notice.

Dr. Batizani has since reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining academic integrity and warned students against engaging in any form of examination malpractice.
