Stray Dogs Raise Safety Concerns at Thyolo District Hospital

The Thyolo District Health Office has expressed concern over the growing number of stray dogs roaming within the premises of the district hospital, saying the situation poses a serious threat to the safety of patients and health workers.

Spokesperson for the office, Fanuel Makina, told Zodiak that some of the dogs have shown signs of aggression.

“We are worried because some of these dogs attempt to bite people within the hospital,” he said.

Makina appealed to dog owners in the surrounding areas to take responsibility. “We are asking dog owners to restrain and properly care for their pets to reduce the risk,” he emphasized.

He suspects that most of the dogs are left when people transfer to other areas.
However, a veterinary officer in the district—who asked not to be named—said poor waste management practices at the hospital are partly to blame.

“The hospital has no proper system for disposing of waste such as leftover food. This is what attracts the dogs,” the officer explained.

In response, Makina also appealed to the public visiting the hospital to act responsibly. “We are urging people to throw leftover food in designated pits instead of leaving it in the open, as this only worsens the situation,” he said.
