The European Union (EU) has called on the country's political parties participating in the forthcoming September 16 elections to uphold the rule of law in ensuring a violence-free campaign period.
EU Programmes Manager for governance and human rights Grace Mganga told Zodiak Online that political violence affects the credibility of an election besides defeating the principles of democracy.
"Malawi has always been a shining example of holding peaceful elections.
With the campaign period heating up now, political parties need to uphold the rule of law in avoiding political related violences," said Mganga.
She said this Wednesday in Mchinji East Constituency during a voter and civic education awareness under the EU-funded Boma Lathu program.
It aimed at enlightening the electorates of their role in the forthcoming polls.
Mchinji National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Public Trust district programs officer Emmanuel Banda has reiterated calls for political leaders to desist from using youths to incite violence.
"The upcoming polls are volatile and politicians must thrive on conducting issue-based campaigns in ensuring that no pockets of violence are registered in the district," said Banda.
Senior Group Mzama in the area of Senior Chief Mduwa in Mchinji said the area is open to all political parties to campaign but cautioned them to avoid castigating each during their rallies.
Malawi goes to the polls on September 16 2025 to elect a president, members of parliament, and ward councillors.
