With the nation set to vote tomorrow, the chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, has expressed full confidence in the preparedness of polling centers following a series of inspections in the capital on Monday.
The visits to centers, including Mdzobwe and Kalolo Teacher Development Centres, were aimed at verifying final arrangements.
Justice Mtalimanja stated that the coordination among officials was a positive sign.
“The coordination effort from all polling staff, including those deployed as party and candidate monitors, has been exemplary,” Mtalimanja said. “This is a positive indicator for a smooth process tomorrow.”
While expressing satisfaction, MEC Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi issued a stern warning against any attempts to undermine the vote. He directed all presiding officers to be vigilant.
“The Commission will not hesitate to order the arrest of anyone involved in electoral malpractices,” Mpesi declared. “I have instructed all MEC officials to instantly report any irregularities. The integrity of this election is paramount.”
On the ground, officials confirmed that logistics were in order. Chrispin Chilaka, the Constituency Returning Officer for Mdzobwe, reported that all materials had been deployed.
“All necessary electoral materials have been delivered from the constituency tally center to every polling station. We have 24 centres in total,” Chilaka confirmed. “Our election staff are present, briefed, and ready to receive voters.”
Justice Mtalimanja cut short her tour to address other urgent electoral matters, reaffirming the Commission's commitment to a credible and efficient poll as Malawians prepare to head to the ballot box.
