Chikwawa Floods Leave Thousands Homeless

Severe flooding has hit several areas in Chikwawa District, leaving thousands of people homeless, with others injured and some confirmed dead.

The floods have heavily affected communities in Nchalo, Sekeni, and Bereu, across five Traditional Authorities—Chapananga, Lundu, Chiputula, Ndakwera, and Maseya zomwe zachititsa kuti anthuwa apite kukakhala muma camp.

One of the affected residents, Mofolo Bryson, says there is an urgent need for food and shelter, as many people are currently struggling to survive in overcrowded camps.

“We have been at the camp for three days now without food or clean toilets and there is very limited space for sleeping,” he said.

Meanwhile, the heavy rains have also caused significant damage to infrastructure, with several roads becoming impassable, Notably, part of the M1 road at Lengwe Turn-Off, which connects to Nchalo and Nsanje District, has been washed away, disrupting transportation and relief efforts.

In response, the Chikwawa District Council, in collaboration with the Red Cross, is currently conducting assessments to establish the total number of people affected and to determine the type of assistance required.

As of now, Chikwawa District Council Spokesperson Leah Malimbasa has confirmed to Zodiak that , four people have been confirmed dead, 35 injured, and thousands have been left without homes.
